Mistletoe and Mistletoe Moth, limited edition print, Australian native plant and insect

$95.00

Mistletoe and Mistletoe Moth - Amyema sp. and Comocrus behri - limited edition print. Australian native plant and insect.

I walk past many mistletoes on my walks around the Jerrabomberra bushland, and they have been on my ‘to paint’ list for years. I am intrigued by the interesting shape of the flowers, and fruit always catch my eye. When I found the Comucrus behri caterpillar on there I knew it was time to paint this plant with the caterpillar and moth.

This Mistletoe is an Australian native, and is parasitic, this particular plant being attached to a Eucalyptus sp. Dispersal of the seed is usually through birds eating the fleshy fruit, and depositing droppings on the branch of the tree. The roots of the mistletoe attach to a branch on the host tree, and absorb water and dissolved nutrients from the tree. The mistletoe does have green leaves and photosynthesises itself, so is considered a partial parasite.
