Common Brown Butterflies are widespread across south western Australia and south eastern Australia including Tasmania. They live in forests, urban areas and grasslands. They are active in spring and summer. Mating occurs in October and November, and the males die shortly afterwards. By late summer only the females are alive, and they will lay their eggs on native and introduced grasses, which are food for the emerging caterpillars.
